Bioecology of the crab Ucides cordatus (Crustacea, Decapoda) in mangroves influenced by the Amazon River, Brazil Acta Amazonica
Amaral,Kárlia Dalla Santa; Vieira,Inácia Maria; Osório,Frederico Moreira; Rocha,Joana D'arc Mauricio; Lima,Jô de Farias.
The mangrove crab (Ucides cordatus) is a valuable fishery resource, overfished along the Brazilian coast. This study aimed to obtain bioecological data on this crab along the coast of the State of Amapá. Six bimonthly samplings were conducted between December 2008 and January 2010. Transects were used to estimate the density (burrows m-2) and population abundance (individuals m-2). All the animals were subjected to biometrics, with females being classified according to their stage of gonadal maturation. The mean density (1.09 burrows m-2) and abundance (0.31 individuals m-2) were influenced by the climate with the highest values in summer (1.17 burrows m-2 and 0.34 individuals m-2). The male to female ratio was 1.38:1 showing significant difference in the...

Biology and population features of a rare species of Pseudopimelodidae from the Upper Paraná River Basin Biota Neotropica
Esguícero,André Luiz Henríques; Arcifa,Marlene Sofia.
Streams contain an expressive fraction of the South American fish diversity, mostly composed of small-sized, endemic, and rare species. Populational, reproductive, and diet aspects of Microglanis garavelloi were studied, aiming to make a wide characterization of this species of bumblebee catfish. This is an endemic species of the Upper Paraná River Basin, and the only representative of the genus in the watershed. It is a littoral-dweller of small rivers, with asymptotic length of 34.1 mm and a population mostly composed of individuals with 20-30 mm of standard length. This species presents high fecundity and mortality rate, and low longevity and growth rate. It is a total spawner, October to February being the spawning period, and probably has brood care...

Lifespan and population dynamics of the endemic South American shrimpArtemesia longinaris (Crustacea: Penaeidae) in southeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
CASTILHO,ANTONIO L.; GRABOWSKI,RAPHAEL C.; SIMÕES,SABRINA M.; SANTOS,ANA PAULA F.; COSTA,ROGÉRIO C.; FRANSOZO,ADILSON.
ABSTRACT The present study investigated the growth, longevity and reproductive dynamics ofArtemesia longinaris in the southeastern coast of Brazil over a two-year period. Monthly collections were conducted in Ubatuba and Caraguatatuba using a shrimp fishing boat equipped with "double-rig" nets. Each region was divided into 7 sampling stations up to 35 m deep. Size frequency distributions, growth, longevity, sex ratio, and abundance of individuals in each demographic class, were compared. The relationship between abiotic factors and abundance of each demographic class was assessed using a Canonical Correlation Analysis. A total of 64,641 individuals were collected (6,928 measured) with an estimated longevity of 1.30 (Ubatuba) and 1.14 (Caraguatatuba) years...

Reproductive biology and recruitment of bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix (Perciformes: Pomatomidae) in the southwestern Atlantic Rev. Bras. Zool.
Souza,Geysa Marinho de; Monteiro-Neto,Cassiano; Costa,Marcus Rodrigues da; Bastos,Ana Luiza; Martins,Raquel Rennó Mascarenhas; Vieira,Francyne Carolina dos Santos; Andrade-Tubino,Magda Fernandes de; Tubino,Rafael de Almeida.
ABSTRACT The bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix (Linneus 1766) is captured by industrial, artisanal, and recreational fisheries throughout its distribution range. The reproductive biology of P. saltatrix in the southwestern Atlantic was studied using 1,102 specimens captured by the Brazilian commercial fleet between March 2014 and December 2015. The recruitment period was identified from records of juveniles in experimental beach seine hauls carried out on sandy beaches in the external sector of Guanabara Bay for four years (2012-2015). Based on the reproductive indices and on the macro- and microscopic analyses of the gonads, spawning peaks were identified in autumn and spring. The size at first maturity was estimated at 35.5, 38.3, and 37.4 cm for females,...
